U.S. Open Update

A week ago, we hit you with a U.S. Open preview that promised a wide-open tournament for the women, and a likely two-horse race over on the men’s side. And so far, the action in Queens has largely been as advertised 😎

• Iga Swiatek, the women’s top seed and the pre-tournament favorite (+210), was a fourth-round casualty over the weekend, and three other players with top-six opening odds have already been sent packing as well 👀

• American star Coco Gauff has been one of the few to avoid an early upset, and an utterly dominant showing yesterday has the 19-year-old on the cusp of her second-ever Grand Slam finals appearance 📈

Gauff is currently the new betting favorite to capture a historic tournament victory (+150), but the 2023 Australian Open champ and #2 seed Aryna Sabalenka is still alive and a very serious threat as well (+200). She’s set to take the court this afternoon as women’s quarterfinal action continues at Arthur Ashe Stadium — take a look at today’s matches 👇

• 12PM ET: Aryna Sabalenka (-350) vs. Qinwen Zheng (+275)

• 7PM ET: Madison Keys (-132) vs. Marketa Vondrousova (+110)

The men are midway through the quarterfinal round as well, and one of the two players who has already punched his ticket to the semifinals should come as no surprise 🥱

Djokovic shockingly dropped the first two sets of his third round matchup, but since then he’s been in championship form, winning nine straight sets. He’s got a semifinal date on Friday with Ben Shelton, the emerging 20-year-old who looked unreal in last night’s All-American clash between with Frances Tiafoe. This kid is something special and the other night hit the fastest serve at this year’s Open at 149 MPG 💨

• 2PM ET: Daniil Medvedev (-265) vs. Andrey Rublev (+215)

• 9PM ET: Carlos Alcaraz (-465) vs. Alexander Zverev (+365)

Most of today’s attention is on a certain Spaniard who continues to make dominance look routine, but don’t sleep on the first matchup of the day. Medvedev has been one of the most consistently excellent players in the game for years, Rublev is one of the most likable guys on tour, and to add even more intrigue, the two are as close as it gets 🤝

According to oddsmakers, their match should be a bit more tightly contested than the nightcap, where the top seed Alcaraz is a huge favorite over the 12-seeded Zverev. And that’s not a knock on Zverev, who already has a finals appearance at this stadium under his belt and is coming off a crazy almost five hour match vs. Sinner 😤

But Carlitos has dropped just one set so far in defense of his crown. Another finals showdown between him and Djokovic is looking more and more inevitable by the day…and you can definitely sign me up for that 🍿
