Trey Lance Has Played 7 Snaps This Season, But Is Still Third In OROY Odds

Despite Trey Lance having just 5 passing yards and 3 rushing yards this season, he’s still in the race for OROY 🏈 (3 minute read)

Oddsmakers Love Lance

Trey Lance has only played seven snaps this season. However, he has the third-best odds to win the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year 👀

Current OROY Odds:

  • Mac Jones: +425 (bet $100, win $425)

  • Ja’Marr Chase: +450

  • Trey Lance: +800

  • Trevor Lawrence: +1000

  • Justin Fields: +1000

The last five OROY winners played 15+ games for their respective teams, with all but Alvin Kamara having a consistent starting role

  • 2016 – Dak Prescott (16 GP, 16 starts, 96% off. snaps)

  • 2017 – Alvin Kamara (16 GP, 3 starts, 45% off. snaps)

  • 2018 – Saquon Barkley (16 GP, 16 starts, 83% off. snaps)

  • 2019 – Kyler Murray (16 GP, 16 starts, 96% off. snaps)

  • 2020 – Justin Herbert (15 GP, 15 starts, 93% off. snaps)

The Garoppolo Roadblock

Jimmy G is the obvious roadblock to Lance’s playing time. While Garoppolo put on a show Sunday night vs the Packers, his stats still resemble that of an average QB

  • 760 passing yards (19th in NFL)

  • 4 passing TDs (T-18th in NFL)

  • 67.4 CMP% (20th in NFL)

Even though Garoppolo has basically no chance to be the 2021 NFL MVP at +10000 odds, Coach Kyle Shanahan continues to support him as his QB1. The longer Jimmy G remains the starter in San Francisco, the worse Lance’s odds for OROY will get

The 49ers’ Plan For Lance

As of now, Lance is a goal line QB, and he’s a lot more efficient at it than Jimmy G

  • Week 1 vs DET: 5 passing yards, 1 passing TD, 7% off. snaps

  • Week 2 vs PHI: Did not play

  • Week 3 vs GB: 1 rushing yard, 1 rushing TD, 4% off. snaps

Lance is still a raw prospect that needs to develop before getting the keys to the franchise, and this system is the perfect way to introduce him to the NFL

But, only receiving seven snaps through three weeks of football will hinder his ability to maintain momentum in the OROY race. He’s fighting with Mac Jones (3 starts, 100% off. snaps) and Ja’Marr Chase (3 starts, 89% off. snaps), who are both playing valuable roles for their teams

For My Parlay Gurus

If for some reason the 49ers turn to Trey Lance over Garoppolo, then that probably means San Francisco has lost some games

Potential Parlay:

  • Trey Lance to win OROY: +800

  • 49ers under 10 wins: +120

If you bet $100 on this parlay, you’d be looking at a $1,880 payout. No disrespect to Jimmy G, but I’m hoping the 49ers’ offense goes up in flames so I can see Lance take over and my pockets get fatter 😏
