🏀 Who Goes Down Today?

Hopefully your bracket is still intact as we enter the second day of madness, but I'm guessing you didn't have Oakland. There are a number of potential upsets that are just waiting to happen across nine hours of high-stake hoops. We've got you covered 🏹 (3 min read)

The Madness Continues

Day two of Madness gets going in a few hours, and we have another action-filled day of games. Almost no brackets remain perfect thanks to Oakland beating Kentucky, and conference tourney winners Duquesne, Oregon and N.C. State staying hot 🔥

Over nine hours of hoops will take place once FAU and Northwestern gets going at 12:15PM EST, as teams attempt to punch their tickets to the second round. While some of these high-seeded contests tend to go as expected, there are some interesting match-ups to highlight with upset potential. But first let’s show some love to Jack Gohkle who hit 10 threes last night 🏹

  • Spread: FAU -3.5

  • Moneyline: FAU -182, Northwestern +150

  • Over/Under: 142.5 Total Points

  • When: 12:15PM EST on CBS

Northwestern secured their first ever back-to-back NCAA tournament selections to land a date with last year’s cinderella team. After starting out the season hot, ranking as high as #7 in December, the Owls came down to earth as we moved into 2024

  • This team is fresh off a Final Four appearance, losing a heartbreaker to San Diego State on a Lamont Butler buzzer beater

  • Still, the Owls have Johnell Davis, who is the quintessential star college guard — undersized, scrappy and a capable shotmaker

  • Perimeter Clash: This game could come down to Boo Buie and Davis. Both serve as the engine of their respective offenses

  • Spread: Florida -1.5

  • Moneyline: Florida -120, Colorado +100

  • Over/Under: 159.5 Total Points

  • When: 4:30PM EST on TBS

In the mid-afternoon we have a battle between two teams that lost in their conference championship games, while also boasting potential NBA prospects in Cody Williams (Jalen Williams’ brother) and Walter Clayton Jr.

Colorado enters this game with some momentum, beating Boise State in the first four to secure their spot in the big dance. Florida will be playing down some size after Micah Handlogten went down during the opening minutes of the SEC championship, so Colorado should try to force the issue in the paint

  • Colorado big man Eddie Lampkin Jr. can control the glass and help win the possession battle

  • Pace will be the key determinant in this game, especially for Florida, who plays with the 18th-fastest tempo in the country

  • If Walter Clayton can get out in transition and help force turnovers with his frame, then the Gators might be able to extinguish the Buffalo’s hopes of moving forward

  • Spread: Duke -12.5

  • Moneyline: -850 Duke, +570 Vermont

  • Over/Under: 132.5 Total Points

  • When: 7:10 PM EST on CBS

While this game is projected to be a fairly easy Blue Devil victory, I think it has the makings of a potential blue-blood takedown. Look, I’m not saying Duke is a shoo-in to lose, but they have faltered a bit heading into the tournament, having lost to both N.C. State and UNC 👀

  • Vermont is red-hot right now, and granted they have played against worse competition, but they are the winners of 10 in a row

  • Can TJ Long match Kyle Filipowski when it comes to scoring? That question might help determine the outcome

  • Still, I think if Duke plays with physicality they should win, especially since UVM does not have a ton of firing power

Lock in for another electric day of madness, truly no better time of the year than now 🙏

Trivia Question: Since the 1996 tournament, Duke has the most Sweet 16 appearances. What are the three other schools just behind them?

For My Parlay Gurus

For a special NCAA tournament edition parlay I’m going to start with Northwestern, they are well-coached and have a legitimate perimeter star. Meanwhile, I like Colorado to pull things off and continue their hot streak. Finally, I’m going to take the under between Vermont and Duke. This is really the only way for the Catamounts to win — by limiting a total number of possessions 👇

  • Northwestern ML vs. FAU: +150

  • Colorado ML vs Florida: +100

  • Vermont vs Duke Under 132.5 Total Points: -110
