Bet The Favorites In The Historically Weak John Deere Classic

The John Deere classic arrives this week with one of the more lackluster PGA Tour fields in recent memory. Going up against a domestic LIV Golf event and with The Open Championship in two weeks, the PGA Tour struggles to keep up. Either way, let's dive in ⛳ (3 min read)

The John Deere Classic

As the golf world scrambles to keep up with all the drama swirling around the LIV Golf Series, the PGA Tour limps along and makes its way to the Quad Cities region of Western Illinois for the John Deere Classic. While a historically weak field of golfers are set to take on TPC Deere Run, the eyes of golf fans will be split between the Portland-based LIV event, golfers overseas prepping for The Open Championship, and the PGA Tour. There's no debate now that the pro golf world is changing, but that doesn't stop us 👇

  • Course Info: TPC Deere Run is a Par-71 stretching to just under 7,300 yards

  • Last Year's Winner: Lucas Glover with a score of -19

  • To emphasize the lack of star-studded golfers this week, there is not one golfer competing who is currently inside the Top-50 of the Official World Golf Rankings 😯

Even with minimal name value, there are still some quality golfers who are in solid form coming into the event. This course tends to play fairly easy and should put an emphasis on approach shots and getting hot with the putter. Below are the golfers at the top of the betting board ✏️

  • Webb Simpson: +1000 (bet $100, win $1,000)

  • Adam Hadwin: +1800

  • Jason Day: +2200

  • Sahith Theegala: +2200

  • Denny McCarthy: +2500

PGA Tour Rookie To Watch

Last week at the Traveler's Championship, Sahith Theegala experienced a heart-breaking loss late in Sunday's round with a double bogey on the 18th. The talented, young golfer has a long career ahead of him, and these are unfortunately the tough growing pains that joining the PGA Tour can bring. He does, however, come into this week as one of the favorites, and will look to put those demons behind him in Illinois ⛳️

  • Out of the 156 golfers in the field, Theegala ranks 11th in strokes gained: approach, one of our key stats to target this week

  • He has finished in the top-5 in two of his last three starts

  • The currently 66th ranked golfer in the world will get a breakthrough win soon enough; perhaps at this weekend's John Deere Classic 👀

Theegala is certainly trending in the right direction, and definitely worth a look at +2200 in the weaker field of golfers 📈

Trivia Question: What fan-favorite and current world No. 12 ranked golfer had his first PGA Tour victory at the John Deere Classic in 2013? (answer below)

Other Betting Favorites To Watch

While name recognition may not be the #1 trait for some of the golfers at the top of the betting board, stats and recent form tend to speak for themselves. Even though the names may not jump off the page, the average fan may be shocked to learn how elite some of these golfers are 👇

  • Denny McCarthy has always been a putting guru, and this season has been no different as he comes in ranked No. 2 in the field

  • The smooth swing and majestic short game of Adam Hadwin has him ranked No. 1 entering this week in scrambling; some of this is what propelled him to an early lead at the US Open

  • The pre-tournament favorite, Webb Simpson (👈 this swing is so pure), has his game back in form after finishing 13th last week and top-30 in three of his last four starts

It's always easy to make a case for the golfers with the best odds, but that's especially the situation when the field is this thin. This doesn't appear to be a week to get cute by diving into long shots and sleepers, and I'll be playing it pretty straightforward by targeting these previously mentioned names and hoping long-term consistency is what leads them to a solid finish 🏁

For My Parlay Gurus

We often see the cream rise to the top in weaker fields, and the more prominent golfers move up the leaderboard as the tournament progresses. It's hard to pinpoint the winner heading into this week, but I love getting after some finishing position bets. In order to parlay a few of them together, they have to be in the same finish range, hence all the Top-40s. Check it out and you'll hopefully give yourself a nice sweat heading into Sunday's final round 👇

  • Webb Simpson Top-40 Finish: -175

  • Denny McCarthy Top-40 Finish: -160

  • Jason Day Top-40 Finish: +115
